Privacy
Ferry is built so that we don't need your data. Here is exactly what we handle, and what we don't.
The Ferry app
- Your backup is created on your computer and written to your USB drive. It never passes through us.
- It is encrypted with AES-256 using a key made from your password. The password never leaves your computer.
- The app sends no analytics or usage data. It only goes online to download the official Ubuntu installer and, if you choose it, to upload a cloud copy.
The optional cloud copy
If you keep a cloud copy, we store:
- Your encrypted backup file. We cannot open it — we never have your password.
- A scrambled (hashed) form of your restore code, so the code can find your backup. The code itself is never stored.
- Your email address, only if you sign in with email or link a backup to it.
- Dates — when the backup was made and when it will be deleted.
Cloud copies are deleted automatically 30 days after upload, or straight away when you delete them on the account page or restore them in the app. "Delete everything" on that page removes your backups, your sign-in data and any linked restore codes.
Abuse protection
To stop one network from creating endless free backups or sign-in emails, we keep a hashed form of your IP address with each backup, and count sign-in attempts per hashed address for up to 24 hours.
Who handles the data
- Cloudflare runs this website and Ferry's server and database.
- Backblaze B2 stores the encrypted backup files.
- Resend delivers sign-in codes and backup emails, when email is switched on.
We don't sell or share your data, and we don't use it for advertising.
This website
No cookies, analytics or trackers. When you sign in, a sign-in token is kept in your browser's local storage until you sign out; it expires after 30 days.
